Artists Statement:
My work is born from a profound journey of healing and self-discovery. My artistic expression is deeply shaped by early childhood trauma and the complexities of a mentally and sexually abusive marriage. Through my lens, I explore themes of nostalgia, uncertainty about the future, and the internal struggle of feeling “not enough.” During the early years of my marriage, while studying art in college, I grappled with breaking free from societal norms and superficial ideals of beauty in art. I often felt confined by technique and aesthetics, rather than genuine meaning.
This struggle became even clearer when I took a Women’s History course alongside my art classes. Learning about the historical struggles of women helped me understand my own feelings of complacency and sparked my desire for individuality. A pivotal moment came when a woman in my church encouraged me to consider art modeling, admiring my form as a source of inspiration. Her freedom and warmth left a lasting impression on me. However, my then-husband’s immediate rejection of the idea—stating, “Absolutely not. No one gets to see my wife’s body but me”—became a barrier that fueled my determination to reclaim my autonomy. In college, my art became increasingly introspective, influenced by self-portrait photographers like Cindy Sherman. Art modeling became a powerful act of self-empowerment for me, allowing me to reframe my body not as a mere object, but as art. This liberation and healing resonated through my work.
Over the last several years, I’ve continued to prioritize my own healing and growth, striving to understand my identity beyond my past. My self-portrait photographs now reflect moments of deep reflection, experimentation, and empowerment. Through my journey, I aim to inspire other women and artists to find their own voices and strength.
